I’m the first to admit that I don’t like talking about Periods! They are part of life and you know… are so important but gosh being a woman can be so complicated and at the end of the day, I have to admit that knowing your body and your period can tell you a lot about your health.
Often when we hear “period” in this culture, all the focus goes to PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and the emotions it can bring or the cramps and discomfort of bleeding. There is the “bleeding through your pants fear” and the “where is the side trashcan” problem but what about what your period symptoms mean?
There are a lot of myths about periods but the biggest one is that PMS and cramping are normal. More than 80% of women report these symptoms but that doesn’t make them normal. I know, you’re rolling your eyes right now. I did for awhile as well. In high school, a hot water bottle was my best friend and I even got a stomach ulcer from taking too much Motrin (my cramps were so painful getting a stomach ulcer was never something I thought could happen).
What PMS Symptoms are telling me:
Remember when we talked about stress last week? Well your body has a hard time responding to the changing hormonal environment and that can create physiological stress that can impact your systems in a variety of ways. The weakest parts will break down first:
Symptom: Cravings, nausea, bowel changes before your period
Reason: These symptoms are a good sign that your digestive system is on the weak side. Make sure you’re eating food that not only agrees with your body but also gives you the proper nutrients. Pay attention to how you feel (on and off your period) when you eat particular foods.
Symptom: Breast tenderness, headaches or irritability

Symptom: Trouble sleeping or feeling anxious
Reason: Your body is in need of a boost, you’re running low on important resources your body needs to run. Try eating a banana and some peanut butter about 30 minutes before going to bed.
